The scanner hardware is used every time a fax is sent.

Although its not a guaranteed fix, try cleaning the underside of the scanner glass giving particular attention to the white strip on the right. If that fails the scanner module is probably the problem.

General
The Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) will need to be removed before the glass can be removed. You will also need a T10 Torx head driver approximately 6" long. Driver handles that accept removable bits may be too large in diameter for this particular job.

Removing the ADF
1. Hinge the ADF upward as if you are going to manually scan a document.
2. In the hinge area there is two black pull latches. Pull them up and lift the ADF straight up to remove it. It may take some side to side rocking before it will disengage.

Removing the Scanner Glass
1. Remove the four T10 Torx head screws around the perimeter of glass, i.e. two in the ADF hinge area and one on the right and left.
2. Remove the Control Panel overlay. It pries off.
3. Open the printer as if you are going to access the cartridges and disengage the support legs. Two latches at the base of each leg must be pried outward with a slot style screwdriver to disconnect them. The scanner assembly will now "flop" freely, so steady it while removing the four screws on the underside.

Note: The screw in the front is hidden under the piece that you grasp to gain cartridge access. Two latches must be released to remove it. The screw can now be seen using a flashlight but may be obscured by some wires.

Samsung SCX -4300 error

It must be "1.13fix" not "1.13"! Let's start again. To solve problem you need to download PATCHED by scx4300.exe 1.13 firmware where additional reset procedure was implemented in.

To patch firmware you need to unpack archive in any folder then open commad line interface go to this folder then type "fix4300.exe SCX4300_V1.13_Fact_romdl.hd". If no error occurs you will find file "FIX_SCX4300_V1.13_Fact_romdl.hd". It's a patched firmware. The next step is to download this file to printer.

Enter TECH mode, activate download by "Menu > Data Setup > Flash Upgrade > Local [OK]" then type in command line "usbprns2.exe FIX_SCX4300_V1.13_Fact_romdl.hd" to start download. During download printer displays:
Data receiving > Flash erasing > Flash Programming > Checksumming > Download Ok then printer will restart. It's all.

To reset all counters and unblock printer enter Tech mode go Data Setup > Clear counters. In this menu you will find "Clear All CNT" instead of "Total Page CNT". Choose "Clear All CNT" then press [OK]. Printer will display "warming up" and LED will yellow for seconds then change to green.

After reset all counters in report will be zero and toner 100%. You may repeat this procedure as soon as you need.

You can follow these steps to resolve the issue.
How to clean without removing the bulb:

Take off the hood.

At the back side, on top behind the window, are two round holes. With a small screwdriver you can take out the two screws.
Lift the back side of the window and at the same time click the front loose (first left then right).

The window can fully be taken off by disconnecting the wire (there is a plug at the rear side of the window on the right side).

On top of the bulb and mirrors there is a black cap, you can remove it by putting a small screwdriver in the two square holes
(one at a time) and pull the screwdriver to the right, the cap clicks off.

Now you can see the mirrors and the back side of the bulb (at the back side there is a wire). Clean the mirrors and the front side of the bulb using a wet cloth (with your small finger you can clean the front side of the bulb, that looks down).
You don't need to remove the bulb!

Scanner failure...turn power off than on...ALL four lights, COPY, FAX, SCAN, and PHOTOCARD blink continously...

Every time the printer gets turned on and goes throught the initalization process it makes the loud noise as the scanner bulb attempts to make a pass accross but fails...never even needed to scan anything.

Proceeded to buy new printer for the house for the wife and kids to use....Now starting a new business so dug it out from the basement, connected it to my computer with the software loaded and still it does not work. Has the same exact issues...Read all the suggestions...Want to remove the strip under the bulb as suggested, but dont know how to get at the bulb. Do you need a special tool?? Does this end the nightmares for good??

Can this unit be salvaged or am I better off just buying a newer model and be done with it??

I have an HP PSC 2210, it prints, faxes and manages to copy but when it comes to scan this comes up: "Error: An error occurred communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure the scanning device is connected properly and try again." I have tried tis countless times with no success, there's one cable to the All in one and every other function works. Help

I had the same problem for months until today I decided to fix it for once and all. I uninstalled the software on the computer. I downloaded the utility from HP's Website to do a 100% uninstall. I then downloaded the driver 2.1.0 from HP's website and didn't use the CD for the re-installation. Here is the website:

The Driver - HP Full Solution Software Driver - 166.14 MB
Cleaner - Software Cleanup Utility - 2.04 MB

When you run the cleaner, open it from where it extracts to (defaults for me was C:\HPAiOScrubber) and run the file OjScrubber.exe and press the plus for the 2200 scanner and uninstall both of those. I don’t know if it's necessary but I uninstalled everything on that list.

So again;
1. Uninstall Software from PC (Control Panel).
2. After the forced restart run the Cleaner.
3. Install the driver you downloaded (166.14 MB).

When you install the driver keep the USB wire disconnected until it tells you to plug it in and after you put it in it should take 5min (mouse will freeze, don’t worry) then it should show a green check mark, and it will continue the installation.

I did that and it worked for me.

I have an HP PSC 750,
and I too am getting the same old "Scanner Failure. So Please shut it down and then unplug it.
Well I do not have a re-fresh button like some of those guys say for me to do!
So this is what I found that has worked for me and hopefully for you all.
1. Turn off your printer and then UNPLUG IT!
let it sit for at least 5 minutes then repulg it. (if you do
not need it I sometimes leave it unplug overnight and replug it the very next morning).
This will help it to go into the refresh mode.
2. What is happening here is there is a memory set problem here.
What this printer needs for it to be RE-SET!
This is why we need to un plug it from time to time.

You see when you leave this printer on, it goes into a scanner memory by default 9 Why I do not know but this is my belief!), and when you all try to copy it does not want to go into this copy mode.
By unplugging it and replugging it this will re-set your printer to where it is like it should be.

Now if you are an electrician, you can put an on and off switch on this cord where it is easier for you to reach if your cord is too far buried for you to reach.

And if you are not an electrician...... Please get some help from someone who knows what they are doing and what you are going to do with this powercord for your printer. PLEASE!

NOTE: YOU MAY NEED TO ( UN PLUG AND REPLUG ) THIS MORE THAN ONCE, BECAUSE OF THE STUBBORNESS THAT YOUR PRINTER IS IN AT THAT TIME.

Scanner error keeps coming up

I had this problem develop yesterday after 2 1/2 years of good service from this machine.

Why I have no idea? Maybe the cover shifts and covers a sensor or receptor?

Can't guarantee this will work, BUT don't deviate from this procedure. This worked on my Canon s630. Taking the printer apart is not that easy, you must work on the basis that the printer will be write off before start stripping it down.

Waste Ink Tank Full Error Reset

1. Turn off printer
2. Hold down Resume button and press Power button.
3. Keep holding down Power button and let Resume button go.
4. Press Resume button 2 times then let BOTH buttons go.
5. Green lights will flash and then stop blinking.
6. When green lights are solid, press the Resume button 4 times.
7. Press the Power button and the printer should turn off, if not, press the Power button 1 more time.
8. Done.

Great site, hope I can find some help. My fairly old Canon S750 started acting up by banding and poor print quality. After replacing all the ink I am unable to get it to print at all. The lights were flashing orange 7 times then green once. Attempted resettting ink waste tanks following some instructions I found on this site but now printer flashes orange followed by green 7 times then once green. Any help folks? Thanks

HP Officejet K60 Alignment Failed /no yellow color

The printer must be able print yellow in order to execute the alignment. Part of the alignment process involves scanning printed yellow bars. See the web page below for a sample of the printout. I suggest that you clean the carriage and cartridge electrical contacts with a cotton swab moistened with water. If you still fail to get yellow, test the cartridge in another printer. Any Deskjet 900 series will accept the cartridge.

Lexmark C910 981 Service Switch Error

I fixed 2 printers with this error msg. the first printer had a bad sensor board which had to be replaced. Second time around required a lot more TLC because I had to replaced the belt up/down clutch. 1 word for that repair... screws.....LOTS AND LOTS OF SCREWS! You've been warned.

three things can cause this error...
the error normally comes about when the machine hasnt sensed the ITU has been engaged properly, therefore error appears, later releases of firmware(few years ago now) altered the timeing of the mechanism to allow if a longer activation period and this did work some of the kinks out.
first thou the firmware, if you are getting the error all the time though it can be tricky to update on the fly... but can still be done.
next cause is usally because somebody tampers with the little white agitator at the front of machine. The is directly connected to the belt up down clutch, if moved by hand, the clutch will need to be replaced. big job, but not hard.
next is the itu. if the waste toner is full or the lifting mechansism on the ITU has become clagged with debris and toner which constricts movement of clutch, then the error can appear...

Epson Aculaser smudged colours

I dont think it's anything to do with the plastic casing found on either side of the drum unit.

I ran a C1100 with both covers removed, and still had the smear problem.

I cured it by accident, as two metal rollers from beneath the transfer belt fell out when I was messing around. Thinking that I'd never get it all back together again, I messed about with the metal rods and belt for some time, until it all fitted together again.

When I re-tested it, the smearing problem had gone. I was pretty amazed, but pleased of course.

I think the problem could be excessive friction on the belt, caused by the two white nylon rollers located at each side. They press on the belt edges at a 45 degree angle, presumably to keep the belt central. I took these off in order to get it all back together again, and thats the only thing I could think off that could have an effect. I did refit them, and the smear problem was still absent.

Maybe anyone with this problem could try doing this and letting us know whether it worked.

Remove the 6 screws that hold the top cover on (the one with the handle). Then remove one screw from each side that holds the white nylon angled rollers in place.

Put the cover back on, and test to see if your smearing problem has been resolved.

I bought this printer in July and at first I thought that this was a great deal.

A month later I try to refill the cartridge and guess what I discover. This printer monitors the cartridge ink level and there is no way to bypass it. I cant seem to find anything on google.

1.I first try closing all lexmark programs running in the background using enditall2. DIDDNT FIX PROBLEM

2.Next I tried to uninstall the Lexmark software and reinstall.
DID NOT FIX PROBLEM

3.When that did not work I tried to see if I could have just the printer drivers installed and not the lexmark software so what I did was unpacked all the files from the EXE archive and manually installed the drivers using the windows control panel but whatever I do the installation of the drivers it automatically invokes the printer software installation. DID NOT FIX PROBLEM

4. I then installed the printer on a new freshly formatted machine and amazingly it remembered the exact cartridge levels. DID NOT FIX PROBLEM

5. I tried a method someone else suggested here by removing the cartridges and unplugging the printer and letting it discharge for an hour. I repeated this 10 times in a row. I then left the printer unplugged for 2 weeks. At the end of the two weeks I reinstalled the cartridges and plugged in the printer along with installing the printer on a THIRD freshly formatted PC and it STILL remembers the cartridges! DID NOT FIX PROBLEM

6. I went out and bought a new cartridge and the ink counter finally reset and checked if it remembered the ink level on the old cartridge and it did.

After I did this test I realized I diddnt check to see if after I uninstalled the software if it left any files or registry entries on the pc and lo and behold it did.

In the program files folder it originally had a folder called "Lexmark 1300 series" and a folder called "lx_cats". After uninstalling I discovered that the lx_cats folder remains. In the folder there is an XML file, a DAT file which when opened in notepad reveals something very shocking, and an ini file apparently telling the lexmark software to send the dat file to a lexmark site. (I will post the contents of the file when I get a chance)

The DAT file contains the serial number of my printer, the serial number for the cartridges that have been installed, the amount of ink remaining, the amount of ink dropped from the cartridges, the install dates of the cartridges as well at other tidbits of info. I will post the contents of the file when I get a chance.

This makes me wonder that if the printer remembered the cartridge ink level on the second and third pcs, there must be some memory chip on the printer or the cartridge that remembers this info.

Later on I took the risk and opened the printer up and I discovered even more shocking things. First of all I did locate a memory chip but im not sure if its the firmware chip or this "cartridge memory chip". I have the model of the chip as well as a datasheet on it which will be posted when I get access to the other computer. There were some other chips but they were being covered with a metal shield which requires desoldering in order to remove. If this thread gets popular enough I will desolder it as well as take scans of the chips.

I also discovered that instead of using a waste ink pad the printer has a tiny plastic rotating petri dish to collect waste ink. Is this a normal thing in printers?? It was already half full after one cartridge!!!

If you google lx_cats you find info on the contents being spyware.
Man all this is really shocking.

And I thought all my printer nightmares were over when I finally chucked the Epson C84 and Epson CX4600 durabrite models :)

Can't open up HP Director

I have reinstalled the driver for my 2210 all-in-one. Everything is working fine except that I can't open up the HP Director. I can open up the HP Photo & Imaging Gallery. Can I somehow just reinstall the hpqdirec.exe without reinstalling everything over again? I can see both the hpqthb08 and hpqdirec icons in my Program Files/Hewlett-Packard/Digital Imaging/bin

1- unplug the power supply to your printer.
2- turn off completly your computer from start menu.
3- and leave both for a while (5 minutes).
4- turn computer on and wait untill you see your desktop.
5 reconnect power supply to your printer.
6- put paper in document feeder to test.
7- let me know if it worked.

HP Photo and Imaging

I had the problem of HP Photo and Imaging Director not
appearing when I started it. Before I found this thread, I
tried uninstalling and reinstalling the HP software from the
CD. After the reinstall, I had a different problem: Photo
and Imaging Director was not reinstalled. The shortcut was
recreated, but clicking on it gave the message "Windows is
searching for Hpqdirec.exe. To locate the file yourself,
click Browse."

I went to the HP site and downloaded the IE7 patch,
CIT207355-HPCOM-PATCH-v8.exe, but when I ran it, I got the
message "This update does not support any of the HP device
drivers that you have on your PC. You do not need this
software update."

I thought that maybe the problem with IE7 was also messing
up the reinstallation of the HP software, so I:

- Went to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and
removed IE7 (leaving me with IE6).
- Uninstalled the HP software (by putting in the CD and
selecting "Uninstall").
- Reinstalled the HP software, after which I was able to use
Director.
- Reinstalled IE7, after which I was able to use Director
but only with the Alt-Space trick described above.
- Ran the CIT207355-HPCOM-PATCH-v8.exe patch, after which I
was able to use Director normally again.

Samsung CLP-500 - Waste Toner Sensor Replacement

Hi,
I recently aquired a Samsung CLP-500. I got it free with full toner cartridges and was told it needed a little work. I have gotten everything fixed and working after a few days except the last message that is coming up, "Waste Toner Tank Full/Not Install." I have followed the guides on how to clean the waste toner tank and it is clear as can be. That led me to the next logical thing, checking the sensor itself. It turns out that the sensor has just gone bad. I verified this by manually moving the black lever that covers the sensor (and covering the waste toner release wheels). Even after this, with nothing obstructing the sensor, it still has the error. Once in awhile the printer will say "Ready" for a few seconds then goes back to the error message. Mainly what I'm wondering is if anyone has found a place to buy a new sensor or if anyone has a new one they are willing to sell. I would try Samsung, but the warranty on the printer is no longer effective and I don't have the receipts for the printer anyways. Please let me know of a place to pick up on of these sensors as I would really love to get this printer working.

I concur. I have independently and sucessfully removed the intruding plastic of the waste toner compartment and sealed the removed area. I used a Dremel high speed drill (30,000 rpm) and a special cutter to remove the offending plastic in seconds. Then I resealed using tape.

As far as I can determine, the problems is that the infra red emitter is degrading with time and this is coupled with the cadmium sulphide sensor degrading also, due to toner dust. The degradation of the emitter is I suspect, a design flaw.

Once I completed this I have had no further problems - you just need to check the waste toner bin occasionally to make sure it is not full.

This simple procedure will help to avoid scrapping off what is a perfectly good printer!

CX5500/5505 reseting

1. execute the adjustment program (printer must be ON)
2. choose maintenance ink pad menu
3. read
4. initialize
5. Read(again) after "0" press finish
6. choose set shipping data (bottom menu)
7. choose set
8. wait for a while (about 1 minute)
9. if there is a reaction from the printer (it will load some paper or you hear "glodak" sound), the reset process will be done. turn off the printer and then turn on again. repeat read the EEPROM

2. Set the Computer Date as indicated in .bat files preferably b4 extracting the file or run .bat. files
3. Use latest Izarc or winrar to unzip (www.izarc.org)

5. click accept

Other trouble shooting suggestions

1. delete the extracted folder (the unzipped reseter files)
2. change the date as indicated in indoreset.bat then extract again the zip or
rar file.
3. remove or uninstall duplicate printer copies coz it confuses the program
4. transfer in other USB ports

if this doesn't fix the problem try resetting the printer from another CPU or from another installed O.S.

Canon Pixma iP4300

The Pixma iP4300 is fast, its print quality is good, and it has some nice features. Though it does suffer from a few design shortcomings, we recommend it highly.

The Pixma iP4300 set records in all of our speed tests, blasting through ten pages of text at a rate of 11.9 pages per minute. Graphics and photos also printed at a fast pace.

Its print quality showed the advantages of its five-ink design, which uses cyan, magenta, yellow, black, and pigment-black cartridges. The last of these inks helped produce black and mostly precise text output. Photos looked bright and natural on glossy paper, but on plain paper the same images looked a bit grainy and had some banding. Grayscale photos appeared a little rough, and diagonal or curved lines seemed slightly jagged.

The Pixma iP4300 has automatic duplexing (allowing for two-sided printing)--a great bonus for a photo printer at this price. It comes with two 150-sheet input trays, one vertical and one flat-mounted underneath. To designate which tray to use, you press a slim button on the front control panel; next to it, a lighted diagram confirms your choice. The supplied output tray can hold 75 pages.

This printer combines useful features and solid performance, but the design seems intended for sharp-eyed people only. Controls are labeled with small, unintuitive icons that do not clearly indicate their functions. Markings for the PictBridge port and the flat-mounted input tray are in almost the same color as the surrounding plastic, which makes them hard to read.

Though printed and HTML-based documentation for this printer is generally good, the Easy Setup Instructions poster doesn't always make things easy. It assumes that you know what and where all the parts are (for a detailed explanation, you must consult the HTML-based guide). An illustration of how to adjust the paper size in the tray mounted beneath the printer fails to explain how all the sliders work--and they're tricky.

Canon throws in some useful bundled software. Easy-PhotoPrint and PhotoRecord let you edit, organize, and print digital photos. Easy-WebPrint helps you format and print Web content so it doesn't run off the page.

The Pixma iP4300 has it all: speed, impressive output quality, and a good price.

Press and hold the RESUME button, then press and hold the POWER button.
While still holding the POWER button, Release the RESUME button, then press and release the RESUME button two more times in succession.
The printer mechanics will move momentarily. You are now in Service mode. Release the Power Button.
Pressing the RESUME key will select a function; for example, pressing RESUME 4 times will select the clear waste ink counter function. The lamp will alternate color with each key press.
